The conclusion? It’s complicated. Which is, of course, exactly the sort of answer scientists give when they want to seem important at dinner parties.
The Sun: An Absolute Drama Queen
Here’s the situation. Our sun — that reliable, slightly taken-for-granted ball of nuclear fury — is currently what astronomers call a yellow dwarf star. It’s in its middle years, stable, dependable, and not yet doing anything embarrassing. However, in about five billion years, it will run out of hydrogen to burn in its core and begin expanding into a red giant, ballooning to potentially hundreds of times its current size. Mercury and Venus will be toast. Quite literally.
Earth’s fate, meanwhile, has always been assumed to be similarly grim. The general scientific consensus was roughly: engulfed, vaporised, gone. A bit like what happens to your weekend plans when someone suggests a work away-day. However, the new models suggest there’s a fighting chance our planet might actually survive — not through any heroic effort on its part, but thanks to a rather elegant cosmic coincidence.

As the sun expands, two competing forces will battle for Earth’s fate. On one side, increasing tidal forces will drag our planet inward, toward the bloated, sputtering star. On the other, the sun will be violently shedding its outer layers through something called stellar wind, losing mass and consequently weakening its gravitational grip. If mass loss wins the tug-of-war, Earth drifts outward to safety. If tidal forces win, it’s curtains.
“The fate of Earth depends on a delicate balance between these two effects,” explained Mats Esseldeurs, a doctoral candidate at KU Leuven’s Institute of Astronomy in Belgium, in what may be the most understated summary of planetary annihilation ever committed to a press release. Furthermore, he noted that current observations of sun-like giant stars are, tentatively, pointing toward Earth’s survival. So there’s that.

To model all this, the researchers turned to a nearby dying star called L2 Puppis, located 200 light-years away in the constellation Puppis — which, brilliantly, translates to “poop deck.” Astronomy: always keeping it classy. L2 Puppis is losing up to one-millionth of a solar mass per year and is surrounded by a dusty disk thought to harbour a planet twelve to sixteen times the mass of Jupiter. Consequently, it gives scientists a rather useful preview of what our own sun might get up to in its twilight years.
Some previous research has found intact worlds orbiting white dwarfs — the dense, cooling stellar corpses that remain after a star like our sun finally expires. Others have found only rubble. So the universe, much like British weather, offers no guarantees.
What This Means for You (Spoiler: Not Much)
In practical terms, this discovery changes absolutely nothing about your Tuesday. Earth surviving the sun’s death is a question for beings who won’t exist for billions of years — beings who will presumably have far more pressing concerns, like whether their intergalactic commute is running on time. Nevertheless, it is oddly comforting to know that our pale blue dot might yet dodge the cosmic incinerator, drifting quietly outward into the cold dark like a sensible person leaving a party before it gets too loud.
The researchers stress that better observations are still needed. The largest remaining uncertainty, Esseldeurs notes, is simply how much mass the future sun will actually lose.
