If you visit Southwest Louisiana and somehow miss a festival, you have done something genuinely wrong. The region hosts an almost suspicious number of celebrations, including the legendary Kaplan Bastille Day festivities and various crawfish, rice, and sauce piquante festivals that take place with the frequency and enthusiasm of a toddler who’s just discovered drums.
Meanwhile, the zydeco music scene is absolutely not to be missed. Zydeco — a joyful, accordion-driven genre born right here in Southwest Louisiana — is the sound of people who have decided that life is short and dancing is compulsory. Consequently, you will find yourself dancing. You will not know how it happened. You will not be sorry.
Why You Should Go Before Everyone Else Ruins It
Southwest Louisiana remains, blessedly, slightly under the tourist radar. It lacks the Instagram saturation of New Orleans and the theme-park gloss of other American destinations. What it has instead is authenticity so thick you could bottle it, a population of staggering warmth, and an approach to hospitality that makes you feel vaguely guilty for every mediocre meal you’ve ever eaten in an airport.
The Louisiana Office of Tourism will tell you all the sensible, practical things about visiting. We will simply tell you this: go. Eat everything. Learn to two-step. Develop a complicated relationship with hot sauce. The Southwest Louisiana experiences on offer here are the kind that rewire your brain permanently, and honestly, most of us could do with a bit of rewiring.
